Croatia rejects Serbia’s claims of promoting historical revisionism
The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia firmly rejects the claims made in the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia on 2 February 2026, which tendentiously accuse the Republic of Croatia of allegedly promoting hatred, historical revisionism, and intolerance.
The Ministry considers attempts to deliberately distort reality and spread unfounded insinuations aimed at discrediting the Republic of Croatia, as well as creating a false image of Croatia and Croatian society as one that allegedly tolerates or encourages ideologies and practices contrary to fundamental European values, to be unacceptable, CE Report informs via the Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Ministry.
The continuous denigration of the Republic of Croatia, combined with antagonistic political and media narratives dominating Serbia’s public sphere and directed against Croatia and Croats, contradicts the goals of stability, mutual understanding, and the improvement of good-neighborly relations that the Serbian side calls for in its statement, and directly undermines them.
The Republic of Croatia systematically maintains a culture of remembrance based on historical facts, clearly condemns all totalitarian regimes, and commemorates all victims with respect, without discrimination.
The Ministry also emphasizes the need for Serbia to confront its past based on truth and justice, which is a key foundation for genuine reconciliation, the building of good-neighborly relations, and a European future. This includes, among other things, full cooperation by Serbia in locating the 1,740 missing persons from the Homeland War, which is currently completely absent, as well as confronting the consequences of the illegal detention of around 30,000 Croatian defenders and citizens in numerous camps on Serbian territory in the early 1990s.
The Ministry once again reiterates its call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia for an open and balanced dialogue, to which the Croatian MFA remains committed despite the lack of political will on the Serbian side, and expects that the same standards of responsibility and respect for good-neighborly relations will be applied in Serbia’s actions.
The Republic of Croatia remains ready for cooperation and calls on the Republic of Serbia to bring its actions in line with good-neighborly relations, while the Ministry rejects attempts to politicize history and create artificial disputes that do not foster understanding but rather deepen mistrust.
