Germany backs Kosovo reforms amid EU, NATO push
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during a meeting in Pristina with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, emphasized that Berlin and Pristina share a very special and close partnership.
He added that the expansion of the European Union is a geopolitical necessity, CE Report quotes MIA.
“I heard that a large number of students study the German language. It is good that Kosovo is on our side. We all need to make it clear that there is no room for Russian destabilization and disinformation. EU enlargement is now a geopolitical necessity,” Wadephul said.
He also called for the speedy formation of a new government, which citizens of Kosovo have been waiting for eight months.
“We are confident that Kosovo has the strength and the will to implement the necessary reforms. Germany is ready to assist you with its support on this path. It is crucial that the situation here remains calm and that there are no confrontations like those in 2023 and 2024,” Wadephul added, noting that Berlin supports the dialogue to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
President Osmani emphasized that Kosovo aspires to EU membership not as a burden, but as a contributing state.
“We fully agree with the approach of the new German government that the path to the EU should be merit-based. Kosovo is the youngest European economy, but it is dynamic and digital. Kosovo remains committed to good-neighborly relations,” Osmani said, also calling for the removal of measures against Pristina.
During the meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Wadephul stressed that Germany has been an unwavering partner both before and after Kosovo’s independence.
“The Republic of Kosovo is determined and committed to working together with Germany to deepen bilateral relations and to advance on its path toward the EU and NATO,” Kurti stated.
