Multicultural Centre in Tulcea Supports Ukrainian Refugees Amid Challenges

Politics

The multicultural educational centre for Ukrainian refugees in Tulcea, established by the Romanian Red Cross, has become a vital refuge for those fleeing the war. Primarily catering to elderly individuals, the centre provides language courses, employment assistance, and social support, helping refugees integrate into the local community despite financial struggles and an evolving social climate, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Following budget cuts by Romanian authorities last year, many Ukrainian refugees lost direct financial aid and now rely on temporary protection status to remain in the country. Since its inception, the centre has served around 200 people through Romanian language courses and distributed approximately 600 hot meals and social vouchers.

Supported by the Swiss Confederation, the Danish Red Cross, and the British Red Cross, the centre plays a crucial role in integration. According to Simona Covaliov, director of the Romanian Red Cross in Tulcea, about 70% of language course participants have achieved functional proficiency. However, full integration remains a challenge, as many refugees still struggle with financial difficulties and social acceptance.

Among the beneficiaries is 70-year-old Olga N., who fled Ukraine in 2022 and now faces high living costs on a small pension. She recounts how initial support has diminished, and refugees face growing resentment from locals. Similar concerns are echoed by younger refugees like Olga S., who finds it difficult to build a future in Romania due to uncertain residency policies.

Tulcea Mayor Stefan Ilie has acknowledged these challenges, advocating for continued support and infrastructure improvements to accommodate the increasing number of refugees. Meanwhile, humanitarian workers like sisters Liliana Ivanova and Georgeta Bielaly remain committed to aiding those displaced by the war.

Despite hardships, the centre continues to offer crucial assistance, standing as a beacon of hope for those seeking stability amid ongoing turmoil.
