Merz Backs EU Nuclear Talks
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Tuesday he is open to discussing a potential European nuclear umbrella, though only as a long-term option. Speaking in Berlin, Merz emphasized that the U.S. nuclear shield remains essential for Europe’s current security, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
“We should do everything possible to maintain nuclear sharing with the U.S. in the coming years,” Merz stated, noting that while some ideas on European-led initiatives exist, no formal talks have begun.
He referred to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent proposal to extend France’s nuclear deterrent to other EU nations, saying the idea is worth discussing, but it involves many complex issues and would take considerable time.
For now, Merz said, the priority should be improving Europe’s defense within existing frameworks.
