Trump Hits Musk Over EV Subsidies

Politics

Former U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at Elon Musk on Tuesday, accusing the billionaire of relying heavily on federal subsidies for electric vehicles. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote on social media, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

The remarks come amid growing tensions between the two, as Musk has repeatedly criticized Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which includes cuts to EV and clean energy credits. Musk warned that such cuts would be “political suicide for the Republican Party.”

Trump defended his opposition to the EV mandate, calling it “ridiculous,” and argued that “not everyone should be forced to own” an electric vehicle — though no law requires Americans to do so.

Musk also took to X, blasting lawmakers who supported the bill despite pledges to cut spending. Trump further mocked Musk’s SpaceX contracts, suggesting cutting them could save the country “a FORTUNE.”

The feud reignited after Musk’s May exit from DOGE, a controversial initiative to streamline government operations that faced backlash over staffing issues and lack of savings.
