
Greece, EU Discuss Migration Control
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner on Tuesday in Athens to discuss the implementation of the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact. The talks focused on improving returns and strengthening cooperation with third countries, especially Libya, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Mitsotakis stressed the urgent need to prevent a new migration route from forming between eastern Libya and southern Crete, urging Libyan authorities to act. He welcomed the EU's initiatives, noting Brunner's planned visit to Libya on July 8 with migration ministers from Greece, Italy, and Malta.
The prime minister emphasized Greece’s support for the EU agenda on returns and managing external borders, including relations with Turkiye. Brunner praised Greece's efforts in protecting EU borders and called for a balanced approach combining the fight against illegal migration with legal pathways.
Brunner also highlighted pending EU legislative steps, including finalizing the Returns Regulation and defining Safe Third Countries.
