Moldovan Leaders Meet with Gagauz Community Ahead of Autonomy Anniversary

Moldova

On December 20, President Maia Sandu, Speaker Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Dorin Recean engaged with members of the Gagauz community in a discussion marking the 30th anniversary of the Gagauz Autonomy. The dialogue highlighted the autonomy's purpose: safeguarding and promoting the Gagauz language, culture, and traditions, while renewing efforts to achieve these goals, according to the presidential press service, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

The Gagauz Autonomy was established on December 23, 1994, with the adoption of a law aimed at preserving the cultural and linguistic identity of the Gagauz people. During the meeting, participants stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the Gagauz language and culture are preserved for future generations. President Sandu reiterated the central authorities' commitment to cooperation, including the development of educational programs and training for teachers specializing in the Gagauz language.

A call for unity underlined the discussion, emphasizing Moldova as a shared home for all citizens. The Romanian language was acknowledged as crucial for integrating the Gagauz Autonomy into the national framework, improving access to education, employment, and reliable information.

Improved communication between Chisinau and the autonomy was a central theme, with participants highlighting the dangers of misinformation and advocating for better connectivity and credible information sources.

Economic and social development was also addressed, with Sandu noting the ongoing European Village program, which includes 15 projects worth 73 million lei. Additionally, EU investments exceeding €40 million have improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the region.

The event concluded with President Sandu honoring prominent members of the Gagauz community for their contributions and reaffirming the authorities' dedication to preserving the region’s cultural identity. She called for collaboration to make the Gagauz Autonomy a model of prosperity and cooperation within Moldova. "It is time to achieve together what has been delayed for 30 years," Sandu stated.
