Greece to Drop Inactive University Students
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired a meeting Monday to discuss reforms aimed at clearing outdated student registers in state universities. The main goal is to remove long-inactive "eternal students" while offering a final opportunity to those actively working toward graduation, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Mitsotakis emphasized the benefits of this cleanup, stating it will improve universities' evaluation metrics and give a clear picture of active enrollment. He also stressed that this is not a punitive move, but a balanced policy that encourages students to complete their studies in a timely manner.
New legislation will allow older students who have completed at least 75% of their coursework and participated in two exam periods over the last two academic years to extend their studies by up to three more semesters. This is expected to affect around 35,000 students.
Meanwhile, inactive students who exceeded the standard study duration by the 2021–22 academic year will be removed from the register starting this September. Some of these students have been enrolled since as far back as the 1930s.
The meeting also discussed university security measures.
