Bulgaria Ranks 2nd in EU Retail Growth

Bulgaria recorded the second-fastest retail sales growth in the EU in May 2025, according to Eurostat data released Monday. Retail trade volume in the country rose by 2% compared to April and by 7.2% year-on-year. Only Portugal posted a higher monthly increase (2.1%), while Cyprus topped the annual growth chart at 7.9%, CE Report quotes BTA

This comes as retail trade across the euro area and the EU overall declined by 0.7% and 0.8% respectively in May. On an annual basis, retail sales grew by 1.8% in the eurozone and 1.9% in the EU.

Bulgaria's performance was also confirmed by preliminary figures from its National Statistical Institute. Among EU members, Luxembourg also saw significant annual growth (6.3%), while Finland, Latvia, and Sweden experienced the steepest yearly declines.
