UK clears classified storm shadow data for Ukraine

The UK Government will allow European defense company MBDA to declassify information on British components of Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles for Ukraine.

“The Government has agreed that defence firm MBDA can release classified information on UK components for the long-range missile, SCALP, as Ukraine and France look to establish local assembly lines in Ukraine,,” the statement says.

It noted that the SCALP missile is the French version of the British Storm Shadow missile, and that both systems are based on technologies jointly developed by the two countries.

The move comes after the UK became the first country to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons for defensive purposes in 2023 and will allow French and Ukrainian specialists to establish missile production and assembly in Ukraine.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to officially announce the decision during his visit to Ukraine on August 24.

As previously reported, Toby Dickinson, former head of air combat operations in the UK’s Royal Air Force, said that the Ukrainian Defense Forces had successfully integrated Storm Shadow missiles into their strike capabilities.
