Germany to extend border controls until March 2027

Germany will extend controls at its external borders for another six months, until March 15, 2027, a spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

The spokesperson confirmed that Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt had officially notified the European Commission of the decision, following an initial report by the German tabloid Bild, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

“The events at Europe’s external borders show that the fight against illegal migration still requires border controls,” Dobrindt told the publication.

He had announced the intention to extend the controls at the end of July, after tens of thousands of migrants temporarily crossed the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Although internal EU borders are generally open under the Schengen Agreement, Germany reintroduced controls at its borders in September 2024.

Despite growing criticism, the controls have already been extended three times, most recently until mid-September 2026. If the European Commission raises no objections, Germany’s border controls will remain in place until March 15, 2027.
