Canada to expand Ukrainian drone production - EXCLUSIVE
Canada and Ukraine are deepening defence-industrial cooperation, including plans to support the production of Ukrainian uncrewed aerial systems in Canada, despite criticism and threats from Russia.
This was said by Kened Sadiku from Department of National Defence of Canada, in an exclusive interview with CE Report.
The cooperation is intended not only to address Ukraine’s immediate defence needs but also to strengthen Canada’s defence-industrial capacity and expand long-term cooperation between the two countries. According to the Department of National Defence, mutually beneficial defence production partnerships can accelerate the delivery of priority equipment to Ukraine while creating business opportunities and strengthening Canada’s capacity in critical technologies.
Canada recognizes the growing importance of uncrewed and autonomous systems in modern warfare and national security, as well as Ukraine’s extensive operational experience in this field. The Canadian government has identified these systems as a sovereign capability under its Defence Industrial Strategy, making them a priority investment area as Ottawa seeks to maximize secure strategic autonomy.
The initiative is also part of a broader effort to develop a domestic defence-industrial ecosystem capable of supporting both the Canadian Armed Forces and allied countries. Expanding domestic drone manufacturing capacity through partnerships with Ukraine could strengthen Canada’s defence-industrial base, advance the objectives of its Defence Industrial Strategy and reinforce national resilience.
At the same time, Canada is monitoring the potential security risks associated with Russia’s reaction to the growing cooperation. The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are continually assessing risks to Canada’s defence and security, including developments that could affect the broader security environment.
Canada says it remains committed to supporting Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ottawa is providing sustained, multi-year military assistance and continues to work closely with NATO allies and partners on training, equipment donations and capability development.
Despite the possibility of increased Russian pressure, including in the cyber, hybrid or diplomatic domains, Canada intends to maintain its support for Ukraine over the long term while safeguarding national security and strengthening cooperation within the NATO alliance. The government says it will continue pursuing defence cooperation opportunities that support the security interests of both Canada and Ukraine.
