The European Union considers Türkiye a key partner and sees a stronger, trust-based partnership between the two sides as mutually beneficial amid a rapidly changing global context.

This was said by the source in the European Commission, in an exclusive interview with CE Report.

According to the source, closer EU-Türkiye engagement is already evident in several areas, including trade, the prevention of sanctions circumvention, the economy, climate, migration and security.

The source also highlighted cooperation on regional connectivity within the framework of the EU’s Strategy for the Black Sea Region, noting that the two sides are engaging closely on the cross-regional connectivity agenda.

At the same time, the resumption of the Cyprus settlement process remains an important element in building trust and creating conditions for further cooperation, the source said.

Regarding Türkiye’s EU accession process, the European Commission source recalled that Türkiye remains a candidate country. However, accession negotiations have remained at a standstill since 2018.

The source stressed that, despite the difficulties surrounding the accession process, the EU continues to view Türkiye as an important partner and sees scope for strengthening cooperation in areas of shared interest.
