Minions top box office despite weak opening
The Minions appear to be losing some of their box office appeal. Figures from the United States during the Independence Day holiday weekend suggest that the popularity of Illumination’s famous yellow characters may be starting to fade.
The latest installment in the franchise, Minions & Monsters — a prequel set in 1920s Hollywood — topped the North American box office. However, its performance fell short of expectations, earning USD 36 million in the United States and Canada and just over USD 60 million worldwide, including ticket sales from Italy and other international markets, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Toy Story 5 held on to second place, collecting USD 31 million during its third weekend in theaters. The latest Disney-Pixar film has now grossed USD 366 million domestically and USD 764 million worldwide.
A surprise third-place finish went to Young Washington, which earned nearly USD 21 million. Distributed by Angel Studios, the historical drama successfully attracted patriotic audiences by premiering around the July 4 holiday. The film follows George Washington’s early years before the American Revolutionary War and his rise to the presidency. It also received a rare “A” CinemaScore from audiences despite earning only a 57% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Meanwhile, Supergirl suffered a sharp decline, with ticket sales dropping 74% in its second weekend to just USD 9.6 million. The DC/Warner Bros. production has so far earned less than USD 60 million in North America and has only just surpassed the USD 100 million mark globally.
Rounding out the top five is Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day from Universal, which brought in USD 6 million over the weekend. After four weeks in theaters, the film’s domestic total has reached USD 105.3 million.
