Barbie celebrates Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday with new doll
Barbie is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary actress Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) with a doll inspired by the American star and her role in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), the EFE news agency reported Wednesday.
The doll wears a version of the iconic pink dress and diamond necklace from the famous scene in which Marilyn Monroe performs “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”
The design was created by Mattel in collaboration with The Estate of Marilyn Monroe LLC, the organization responsible for preserving and promoting Monroe’s legacy, to ensure that every detail pays tribute to one of her most memorable performances, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
“More than simply paying tribute to this unforgettable look, we are honoring Marilyn as a pioneer — a visionary producer, businesswoman and artist who broke the mold. This doll celebrates her incredible legacy as a whole,” said Robert Best, Mattel’s vice president and creative director of doll design.
The new model joins other Mattel creations dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. Between 1997 and 2009, the company released several dolls celebrating her memorable film roles and fashion moments.
Mattel has also released dolls inspired by stars including Whitney Houston, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue, Aaliyah, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie, Juan Gabriel, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Diana Ross and Elton John, EFE noted.
Marilyn Monroe’s centenary is being marked internationally with a wide range of events, including exhibitions such as Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles and Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait at London’s National Portrait Gallery.
