Singer Shakira made a surprise visit to Quibdó, the capital of Colombia’s Chocó department, one of the areas hardest hit by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10, which reportedly killed around 300 people and destroyed entire communities.

Accompanied by Howard Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett, the artist announced a plan promoted by the Fundación Pies Descalzos and Live Nation to rebuild schools, CE Report quotes ANSA.

“I will dedicate all my personal efforts. My commitment is concrete. We have already raised $1.25 million to begin this reconstruction process,” she said.

Shakira expressed concern that survivors could be abandoned once the emergency ends.

“We cannot allow our children to be unable to return to school,” she said.

She also appealed for support for Chocó, saying the country has a “historic debt” to the region, and expressed her condolences to families who lost loved ones.

“To the parents who lost their children, I do not have enough words. Your pain will not be forgotten,” she said.
