Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow is set to take on her first leading role in a television series, starring in the upcoming Netflix drama The Apology, which has already received a two-season order, EFE reported on Tuesday.

The 54-year-old American actress will portray Evelyn Amspoker, a woman whose son was murdered 18 years earlier in an unsolved case that shocked the nation, according to Variety, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The series follows Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, as they struggle with the lasting consequences of their son's death. When a stranger unexpectedly appears and confesses to the murder, the couple finally sees the possibility of justice.

However, their hopes are shaken when they discover that the killer could receive a reduced sentence. Unable to accept the possibility of a lighter punishment, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take justice into their own hands.

The psychological drama is created and written by Joe Murtagh, known for The Woman in the Wall, and will be directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, whose acclaimed film Another Round won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Paltrow will also serve as an executive producer alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg and Joe Hipps. The series is being produced by independent entertainment company A24.

The project marks a significant milestone in Paltrow's career, which has largely focused on cinema.

She rose to international fame through performances in films such as Emma, Shakespeare in Love and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Her role in Shakespeare in Love earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1999.

She later gained worldwide recognition for portraying Pepper Potts in Marvel's Iron Man franchise and recently appeared in Marty Supreme.

Although Paltrow has previously worked in television, she has never led a television series.

Her earlier small-screen appearances include five episodes of the musical comedy Glee, in which she played substitute teacher Holly Holliday, and a supporting role in Ryan Murphy's Netflix political comedy-drama The Politician.

Netflix's decision to order two seasons of The Apology before its debut comes amid major changes within the streaming company's leadership.

The company has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 6%, while several senior executives have departed or been replaced as part of a broader restructuring.

The two-season commitment signals considerable confidence in the upcoming production, which brings together an Academy Award-winning actress, an internationally acclaimed director and the studio behind several successful independent films and television projects.

A premiere date and additional casting details have not yet been announced.
