Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle made their first joint public appearance in the United Kingdom since returning to the country in late August, visiting a charity in Nottingham, central England, AFP reported.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived smiling and holding hands as they were greeted by local residents gathered behind barriers, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The couple planned to visit three local organizations that support young people through music, film and sport while also working to combat poverty.

Since returning to Britain with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, after spending six years in the United States, Harry and Meghan have largely maintained a low public profile.

However, Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, has undertaken several solo public engagements on behalf of charities he supports or sponsors.

The couple left the United Kingdom in 2020 amid tensions with the royal family and have not served as working members of the monarchy since then.

Shortly after their return, Buckingham Palace clarified that any charitable activities undertaken by Harry and Meghan would be carried out in a private capacity.

Meghan had not made a public appearance in Britain since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

The couple’s last joint public engagement in the country before their departure from royal duties took place at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in 2020.

Security concerns resurface following UK return

Harry and Meghan’s unexpected return to the United Kingdom has renewed debate over security arrangements for the prince and his family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex maintain that they are entitled to taxpayer-funded protection while in Britain.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), which previously determined that Harry’s security arrangements in the UK should be assessed on a case-by-case basis, reportedly met in early September to review the threats facing the prince and his family.

According to media reports, Harry and Meghan currently rely on private security personnel.

Meanwhile, British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday an urgent review of security arrangements for public figures, including politicians and members of the royal family.

The review follows the killing of a former Conservative member of Parliament.
