Paul Bettany says Marvel saved his Hollywood career
British actor Paul Bettany said Marvel transformed his career and personal life following an unexpected twist of fate more than a decade ago, when he was offered the role of Vision just after being told that his Hollywood career was over, Reuters reported.
Speaking to Reuters in London at the premiere of Disney+ miniseries VisionQuest, Bettany said being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had given him opportunities both on and off screen, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
“It means I’ve been able to turn down certain projects and spend time with my family. It means I’ve had the opportunity to direct and write a movie. It means I can get financing for films that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to make,” he said.
Bettany initially joined the Marvel universe by voicing the artificial intelligence assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. before making his on-screen debut as the android Vision in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The actor recalled that the opportunity to play Vision came at a difficult point in his career, after a producer told him that two box-office failures had effectively ended his prospects in Hollywood.
“I was at an audition with a producer — whose name I’m not going to reveal — who told me my career was over,” he said. “I got up, walked out, went downstairs, and my legs gave way. I sat down on Sunset Boulevard and thought, ‘You know what? Maybe he’s right, maybe my career is over,’” Bettany said.
“Then my phone rang. I answered it, and it was Joss Whedon, who asked me, ‘Would you like to play Vision?’ And that is a true story.”
VisionQuest completes a trilogy that began with the series WandaVision (2021) and continued with Agatha All Along (2024). The new series follows Vision as he searches for a new purpose while fleeing alongside a mysterious boy who could be his son.
The series’ creator and showrunner, Terry Matalas, said the production explores contemporary concerns about artificial intelligence.
“We have this house that is supposed to exist in the mind of an artificial intelligence, and it renders things slightly distorted, the way AI does when it combines a multitude of elements to create a unified whole,” he said.
For actor James D'Arcy, VisionQuest continues a defining feature of Marvel’s storytelling by combining action with emotional and philosophical themes.
“It’s about the nature of the human condition,” he said.
