Italian comedian Giorgio Bracardi dies at 93
Musician, singer and comedian Giorgio Bracardi has died at the age of 93, his family announced.
Bracardi, known for his iconic characters Scarpantibus, the “Nicaraguan bird,” and the annoying journalist Max Vinella from the radio comedy show Alto Gradimento, had been staying at a nursing home in Fiano Romano after breaking his femur last spring, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Born in Rome on May 3, 1933, Bracardi grew up in a family immersed in music and entertainment. His mother, Edvige, was a soprano, while his father, Glauco, was a tenor and one of the early managers of Rome’s historic Salone Margherita theatre. Bracardi studied piano from childhood and later became a composer, working with RCA in the 1960s and writing songs for the Sanremo Music Festival.
He became widely known in the 1970s through Alto Gradimento, a popular radio variety show created with Renzo Arbore, Gianni Boncompagni and Mario Marenco. Bracardi developed a series of eccentric characters distinguished by their unusual voices, absurd humour and memorable catchphrases. Alongside Scarpantibus and Max Vinella, his creations included the bombastic character Ermanno Catenacci and other figures that became familiar to Italian audiences.
The show's unconventional style helped establish Bracardi as a distinctive voice in Italian comedy, combining satire, improvisation and surreal humour. Its popularity also opened the way for television appearances, including Quelli della notte, Arbore's influential 1985 late-night programme.
Bracardi continued working across television, music and comedy in the following decades. He appeared on programmes including Pronto, chi gioca?, hosted Chiappala chiappala on Rai 2 and joined the cast of the satirical television show Striscia la Notizia in 1995, where he played the fictional presidential spokesman Lucio Smentisco. In 2008, he voiced the animated character Cattivik in a television series.
His career spanned radio, television, songwriting and acting, leaving a lasting mark on Italian entertainment through his surreal characters and distinctive vocal performances.
