Woman breaks down in tears as Russell Brand rape trial continues in London
Jurors in the London trial of British actor and media personality Russell Brand were shown recorded police interviews with women who have accused him of rape and sexual assault, Reuters reported.
On the second day of proceedings, one woman broke down in tears as she described how she had blamed herself after allegedly being raped by Brand more than 25 years ago, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Brand, 51, a former prominent British television personality and ex-husband of American singer Katy Perry, faces charges involving six women over alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009.
The charges include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.
Brand denies all the allegations and told police following his arrest that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
On Wednesday, prosecutors described Brand as an unscrupulous sexual predator whose career had progressed from stand-up comedy to television presenting and eventually Hollywood films.
Woman describes alleged assault in 1999
During Thursday’s proceedings at Southwark Crown Court in London, jurors watched a recorded police interview with a woman who said she met Brand at an event during the Labour Party conference in 1999.
She alleged that Brand subsequently raped her in her hotel room.
“He knew what he was doing. He wanted to have sex that night, and I was there,” the woman told police.
“I just remember him pushing me. I said ‘no,’ but I was terrified. I don’t remember much after that,” she said.
The woman explained that a 2023 documentary containing allegations of sexual misconduct against Brand prompted her to contact the police.
“I saw how manipulative he was. I realized that was exactly what he had done to me, just in a different way,” she said.
She described feeling that something “dirty” had happened to her and said she initially believed she was responsible.
According to her account, Brand attempted to reassure her that everything was normal, behavior she characterized as manipulative.
She also alleged that Brand told her not to worry because he underwent regular testing for sexually transmitted infections and gave her his email address.
Prosecutors outline additional allegations
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told the court on Wednesday that Brand’s desire for sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious.
According to the prosecution, Brand allegedly attempted to lure an MTV Europe employee into a bathroom cubicle at the broadcaster’s offices in 2001.
In a separate alleged incident in 2004, he is accused of forcing a woman to perform oral sex in a bar restroom.
Brand also faces allegations of sexually assaulting a woman in 2004 or 2005.
Another complainant alleges that Brand raped her anally at his home in 2009 after they had previously engaged in consensual sexual activity.
Later that year, Brand allegedly sexually assaulted a woman who worked for Channel 4.
Brand has denied wrongdoing in connection with the allegations.
Judge addresses impact of 2023 documentary
All six complainants, who are legally entitled to lifelong anonymity, contacted police following the broadcast of the 2023 documentary, Judge Joel Bennathan told jurors on Thursday.
The judge clarified that the women whose allegations were featured in the documentary were not complainants in the current trial and that their claims had not been examined in court.
He also explained that the defense might argue that the documentary had influenced how some complainants remembered past sexual encounters.
“The defense might suggest that the programme prompted the complainants, or at least some of them, to revisit past sexual events and transform them in their memories from consensual acts into the offences they now allege,” the judge said.
The trial is expected to last approximately six weeks, according to Reuters.
