The spectacular robbery carried out in broad daylight at the Louvre Museum in October 2025 will be adapted into a film directed by Romain Gavras and a documentary series based on an investigative book written by three journalists, set to be released Wednesday in French bookstores, publisher Flammarion announced Tuesday, according to AFP.

The adaptation rights for the book Main basse sur le Louvre were sold by Flammarion to production company Iconoclast for the feature film, and to a British producer for the documentary series, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The film’s title, release date, and cast have not yet been announced.

Romain Gavras, 44, is known for films such as Notre jour viendra (2010), The World Is Yours (2018), and Athena (2022). He is also one of the three children of renowned filmmaker Costa-Gavras.

In their book, journalists Jean-Michel Decugis, Jeremie Pham-Le, and Nicolas Torrent describe how a group of “Sunday bandits” managed to enter the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre on October 19, 2025, and steal the French Crown Jewels during a robbery estimated at €88 million.

The theft caused international shock and triggered a crisis within the Louvre’s leadership, ultimately leading to the replacement of museum president Laurence des Cars.

After a seven-month investigation and the arrest of the main suspects, locating the jewels “has become an incomprehensible mystery, a real puzzle that leaves investigators completely bewildered,” the authors wrote.

The robbery also demonstrates that “art theft has become a business like any other for many criminals” and that art “has been desacralized,” they concluded.

“After the era of armored truck robberies and bank heists, the criminal underworld has found a new cash cow — art,” the authors added.
