Türkiye’s electricity capacity surpasses 126,000 MW

Türkiye's installed electricity generation capacity reached 126,113 megawatts by the end of June, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

The ministry said that solar energy's share of the country's installed electricity capacity increased to 27,210 megawatts, accounting for 21.6 percent of the total, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Türkiye's installed electricity capacity continued to grow in June, reaching 126,113 megawatts.

Renewable energy sources accounted for 79,062 megawatts, representing 62.7 percent of the country's total installed electricity capacity. Domestic energy sources made up 71.9 percent of the total.

Solar and wind account for 33.7 percent

As of the end of June, solar energy reached an installed capacity of 27,210 megawatts, representing 21.6 percent of Türkiye's total electricity capacity. Wind power reached 15,281 megawatts, accounting for 12.1 percent.

Combined, solar and wind power totaled 42,491 megawatts, making up 33.7 percent of Türkiye's installed electricity generation capacity in June.

Looking at the distribution of installed capacity by energy source, hydropower ranked first with 32,344 megawatts, representing 25.6 percent of the total installed capacity.

Installed capacity from natural gas reached 25,021 megawatts, accounting for 19.9 percent, while domestic coal-fired power plants totaled 11,565 megawatts (9.2 percent) and imported coal-fired power plants reached 10,466 megawatts (8.3 percent).

Biomass accounted for 2,428 megawatts, or 1.9 percent, while geothermal energy reached 1,798 megawatts, representing 1.4 percent of the total installed capacity.

'We are moving toward a fully energy-independent Türkiye'

Commenting on the figures, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said the rapid progress in solar and wind energy is the clearest sign of the country's major transformation in its energy sector.

"By further increasing our installed capacity, we will continue to move steadily toward our goal of a fully energy-independent Türkiye. As of June, our installed electricity capacity has surpassed the significant milestone of 126,000 megawatts. During the same period, solar energy reached 27,210 megawatts, accounting for 21.6 percent of total capacity, while the combined installed capacity of solar and wind increased to 42,491 megawatts, representing 33.7 percent. The momentum we have achieved, particularly in solar and wind energy, is the clearest indicator of the major transformation taking place in our country's energy architecture," Bayraktar said.
