Europe converts former nuclear plants into battery storage hubs

Closed nuclear power plant sites across Europe are being transformed into large-scale battery energy storage facilities to increase the flexibility of electricity grids.

According to information compiled by Anadolu Agency (AA), Germany is leading the trend by developing energy storage projects at former nuclear power plant sites without the need to build new transmission infrastructure. The transformation is regarded as a strategic step to strengthen grid flexibility as renewable energy generation continues to expand across Europe, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

In the German state of Baden-Württemberg, utility company EnBW is building a battery storage facility at the site of the former Philippsburg Nuclear Power Plant. The project will have 400 megawatts (MW) of power capacity and 800 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with the facility expected to be connected to the grid by the end of 2027. The project is planned to be financed without public support.

Meanwhile, RWE is constructing another battery storage facility at the site of the former Gundremmingen Nuclear Power Plant in Bavaria. The project will provide approximately 400 MW of power and 700 MWh of storage capacity while utilizing the site's existing high-voltage grid connection.

In Belgium, feasibility studies are underway for battery storage projects at former nuclear power plant sites. In the United Kingdom, former coal-fired and thermal power plant sites are being prioritized for large-scale energy storage investments thanks to their existing grid connections. Similar redevelopment projects are also advancing at former power plant sites in Spain and Italy.

Former power plant sites repurposed for renewable energy

Belgium is assessing battery storage projects at the sites of nuclear power plants scheduled for closure, taking advantage of their high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

In the United Kingdom, former coal and thermal power plant sites are considered prime locations for large-scale battery storage because they are already connected to the national electricity grid.

Spain is accelerating investment in battery storage projects integrated with renewable energy facilities as solar power generation continues to grow rapidly. Several former thermal power plant sites are also being prepared for this transition.

In Italy, the national transmission system operator and private companies are implementing battery storage projects at former power plant sites, particularly in the southern regions, to improve grid flexibility.

Battery ecosystem expected to grow

Doğa Can Bayram, Chairman of the Board of the Energy Storage Industries Association, said battery energy storage systems make it possible to store excess electricity generated by solar and wind farms during the day and feed it back into the grid during periods of peak demand, particularly in the evening, thereby improving grid flexibility.

Bayram noted that the increasing frequency of negative electricity prices in Europe in recent years has also enhanced the economic attractiveness of battery storage investments.

"Storage facilities play a critical role in grid balancing, frequency control, and energy supply security," he said.

He added that the next phase of Europe's energy transition will focus not only on expanding renewable energy generation but also on rapidly deploying large-scale storage systems capable of storing that electricity.

According to Bayram, the conversion of former coal-fired and nuclear power plant sites into battery storage hubs is expected to become increasingly common across Europe, especially in Germany, in the coming years.

He emphasized that modernizing these sites with advanced technologies supports the development of the battery ecosystem while reusing existing infrastructure reduces investment costs and significantly shortens the time needed to bring new projects online.
