Moldova opens applications for renewable energy community funding

A new call for applications to select and support renewable energy communities has been launched by UNDP Moldova, with financial support from the Government of Italy. The programme has a total budget of $450,000, while each selected community will receive between $50,000 and $100,000, depending on the proposed technical solution and the community’s needs.

To apply, applicants must form an initiative group consisting of at least two potential members, provide a contribution of at least 20% of the project’s total value, and identify a site for installing the equipment, with ownership or usage rights for at least 10 years, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

Applications can be submitted until October 28, 2026, while the selection process is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The call was launched in Ialoveni, where an information session was held with the participation of Carolina Novac, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy. The event aimed to present funding opportunities, the legal framework applicable to energy communities, and the conditions for participating in the call.

“It is important that people can participate directly in producing and using energy from renewable sources. Energy communities provide this opportunity while also creating solutions tailored to local needs. Through the legal framework we are developing and opportunities such as this funding programme, we want to see more initiatives emerging from local communities,” Carolina Novac said.

The Ministry of Energy is involved in developing the framework needed for energy communities to operate. Recently, the Government approved a draft law introducing a dedicated legal form for these communities and facilitating cooperation between citizens, local public authorities and businesses to jointly produce, consume, store and manage energy.
