Greece, Azerbaijan discuss Southern Gas Corridor, energy diversification

Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros N. Papastavrou held a bilateral meeting with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov at the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The meeting focused on strengthening energy cooperation between Greece and Azerbaijan, with particular emphasis on energy security, diversifying natural gas supply sources and routes, and developing the Southern Gas Corridor, CE Report informs via the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy's official website.

Papastavrou highlighted Greece’s important role as a regional energy hub, pointing to the promotion and development of electricity interconnections, including the GSI project with Cyprus and Israel and the GREGY project with Egypt. He also stressed the strategic importance of the Vertical Corridor and the prospects it creates for strengthening energy security and diversifying supply sources.

The two sides also discussed prospects for cooperation in renewable energy and the energy transition, with an emphasis on exchanging expertise and developing new areas of cooperation in clean energy.

The meeting also reaffirmed the two countries’ shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral economic and trade relations between Greece and Azerbaijan, based on mutual trust, respect and common interests.

The two sides acknowledged the positive course of bilateral cooperation and highlighted significant opportunities to increase bilateral trade and further diversify its composition.

Among those attending the meeting from the Azerbaijani side were Ambassador Arif Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Economy Anar Akhundov, and Javid Abdullayev, Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency. The Greek side was represented by Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources Despina Paliarouta, Greece’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Maria Papakonstantinou, and TAP Country Representative for Greece Ioannis Maris.
