Greece's Western Attica loses over 48,000 hectares to wildfires since 2018

Over 48,000 hectares (480,000 stremmas) of land have been burnt in western Attica, Greece, in forest fires during the last nine years, according to an updated analysis of meteo.gr.

The results include the recent wildfire in Porto Germeno, and the analysis includes data from the years 2018-2026 in western Attica. In that time period, six large fires have burnt over 48,000 hectares, according to records of the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

As the Porto Germeno fire is still ongoing, the data includes burnt land assessed up to midday on 2 August 2026, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

In a related statement, the results are described as "impressive and concerning", and meteo.gr said it would update the analysis with the final extent of burnt land at Porto Germeno.
