Scholars Oppose Euro Referendum

Bulgaria

Dozens of law professors from major Bulgarian universities have issued a public statement opposing President Rumen Radev’s proposal for a national referendum on Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro, CE Report quotes BTA

In a joint position published on social media, 40 legal academics—including faculty from Sofia University, New Bulgarian University, Plovdiv University, and Veliko Tarnovo University—expressed "deep concern" over the proposal, which they say would breach Bulgaria’s Constitution and undermine its EU commitments.

Referring to a recent Constitutional Court ruling (Decision No. 3, Feb. 8, 2024), the scholars argue that such a referendum would be unconstitutional and could erode the foundations of Bulgaria’s democratic legal order. They warn it could damage the country’s international reputation and its relationship with the EU.

The signatories urge Parliament to uphold the Constitution and call on the legal community to defend the rule of law and Bulgaria’s democratic path.
