Bulgarian tennis star advances in WTA Rome tournament

Bulgaria's top-ranked women's tennis player, Elizara Yaneva, advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 clay-court tournament in Rome, which has a prize pool of EUR 115,000.

The 19-year-old defeated Russia's Sofya Lansere 6-2, 7-6(4) in a match that lasted one hour and 38 minutes, CE Report quotes BTA.

This is Yaneva's second consecutive victory in the Italian capital, after she eliminated top-seeded Oksana Selekhmeteva from Spain in the first round. As a result, the Bulgarian has now secured 27 points for the WTA rankings, where she is currently ranked 196th, as well as EUR 3,478 from the tournament's prize pool. In her first-round match, Yaneva earned her first victory against an opponent in the top 100, as Selekhmeteva is currently ranked 88th.

In the quarterfinals, Yaneva will face the winner of the match between Aurora Zantedeschi and Martina Trevisan, both representing the host country.
