Berlin to reward tourists for eco-friendly behavior

Tourists in Berlin will in the future be able to earn small rewards by collecting litter around the city or by traveling in a “green” way, according to the tourism agency Visit Berlin, as reported by DPA.

The program, called “BerlinPay,” is expected to launch this summer, with a focus on the city’s waterways, according to the agency’s website, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“We are making responsible behavior more visible and rewarding it. Those who act consciously near and on the water—for example by collecting waste, improving neighborhoods, or supporting social projects—will receive recognition from participating partners: small benefits or special experiences in Berlin,” Visit Berlin said.

The agency added that it is still seeking partners such as restaurants, hotels, and cultural institutions that could join the scheme and offer rewards to tourists.

The model for BerlinPay is based on a concept from Copenhagen called “CopenPay.” In that system, tourists can receive benefits such as free boat rides or bike rentals if they can prove they traveled sustainably—for example by taking the train instead of flying.
