Italy concluded the European Athletics Championships in the best possible way, finishing first in the medal table. The two gold medals won on the final day, by Larissa Iapichino in the long jump and by the men’s 4x400-meter relay team, secured Italy’s overall triumph at the championships.

Iapichino won gold with a jump of 7 meters on her first attempt. The Italian finished ahead of Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers, who jumped 6.99 meters, and France’s Hilary Kpatcha, with 6.98 meters. For Iapichino, it was her first gold medal at a major international event, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Italy also celebrated a major victory in the men’s 4x400-meter relay. Edoardo Scotti, Luca Sito, Mohamed Soudassi and Lorenzo Benati put in a strong performance and defeated Great Britain in the final race of the championships, securing another gold medal for the Italian team.

Italy also won silver medals in the marathon through Pietro Riva and in the women’s team classification, while the women’s 4x400-meter relay team finished third to claim bronze.

The technical director of the Italian national team, Antonio La Torre, described the performance as one of the best in the history of Italian athletics. “This is the strongest Italy ever,” La Torre said, highlighting that the results in Birmingham demonstrated the strength and unity of the team.

Following the conclusion of the European Championships, Italy’s attention has now turned to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where the country hopes this generation of Italian athletes can continue its run of success.
