FIFA President supports increased funding among 211 members

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has faced mounting criticism in recent months, has assured the presidents of six continental confederations that he supports increased funding and a fairer distribution of funds among all 211 member associations.

The FIFA Council will consider additional payments to the associations at a meeting in mid-October, CE Report quotes STA.

In a letter, Gianni Infantino said he would support “the highest level of additional funding that can be provided.” He stressed, however, that none of the amounts currently under discussion represents an approved commitment.

The FIFA president has recently faced mounting criticism, including calls for his resignation, after he proposed selling a stake in the commercial rights to World Cups to private investors.

In his letter, Infantino explained that the abandoned proposal was intended to generate additional funding for football and enable FIFA to invest more in the sport.

Earlier this month, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani said each FIFA member association should receive an additional $10 million (€8.8 million) over the four-year period from 2027 to 2030.

Infantino responded by indicating that he would match any other offer. “I will support the highest possible level of additional funding that can responsibly be provided within FIFA’s appropriate governance process,” he added.

FIFA confirmed in early September that, despite the criticism, Infantino will seek another term as president in the March election, as he continues to have significant support within football. Saudi Arabia, host of the 2034 World Cup, publicly endorsed him last month, while the African Football Confederation (CAF) and South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) have also expressed their support.
