Moldova’s Ion Basoc wins historic gold at IBSA World Championships

Moldovan athlete Ion Basoc won the gold medal at the IBSA World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, becoming world champion in a historic achievement for Moldova’s para judo.

The victory marks the first-ever gold medal won by a representative of the Republic of Moldova at an IBSA World Championships, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

Basoc secured four victories in the J1, over-90 kg category, defeating opponents from Spain, Mongolia, Brazil and Uzbekistan.

In the final, the Moldovan athlete defeated Brazil’s Wilians Silva de Araújo, the opponent who had previously prevented Basoc from winning a medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and at the previous edition of the World Championships.

The Moldovan delegation in Tbilisi consisted of eight athletes. Vadim Crețu finished ninth in the J1, up-to-70 kg category, while Nicolai Bondarev placed seventh in the J2, up-to-90 kg category.

Basoc’s historic victory adds a major achievement to Moldova’s record in international para judo and represents a landmark moment for the country at the IBSA World Championships
