Canadian PM questions FIFA leadership

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he no longer has confidence in Gianni Infantino’s ability to lead FIFA, following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada co-hosted.

Speaking a day after the tournament concluded, Carney said his loss of confidence stemmed from reports about Infantino’s now-abandoned proposal to open the World Cup to private investment, CE Report quotes ANSA.

“I certainly do not have confidence in light of what has come to light,” Carney said, referring to the proposal.

He added that Infantino’s alleged failure to discuss the plan with FIFA’s leadership group “should be fatal” to his tenure as head of world football’s governing body.

“That is not how you run a company, not even a small one,” Carney said, criticizing the way the proposal was reportedly handled.
