FIFA introduces advanced offside technology for World Cup 2026
FIFA has confirmed that an advanced version of semi-automated offside technology will be used at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the aim of speeding up decisions and avoiding unnecessary interruptions to play.
The new system will send real-time alerts to assistant referees when a player is more than 10 centimeters offside. This will allow officials to raise the flag earlier in clear-cut situations, rather than waiting for the attacking move to conclude, as has often been the case during the VAR era, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
According to FIFA, the technology is designed to reduce frustration among players and fans while also lowering the risk of injuries that can occur when play continues despite a clear offside position.
However, the final decision will remain in the hands of the match officials. Referees will have the authority to ignore the signal if they suspect a technical issue or if the situation requires further interpretation.
The technology will not be able to determine extremely close offside calls, nor will it rule on subjective situations, such as whether a player interfered with an opponent without touching the ball.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and FIFA considers the system another step toward improving accuracy and efficiency in football officiating.
