Gianni Infantino gains unanimous support from CONMEBOL
Swiss official Gianni Infantino has received the backing of CONMEBOL if he decides to run for another term as president of FIFA in next year’s elections, DPA reports.
Infantino succeeded fellow Swiss Sepp Blatter in 2016 and was re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023. According to FIFA statutes, he is eligible to run again in 2027, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
The 56-year-old has not yet officially confirmed whether he will seek another mandate.
CONMEBOL’s council unanimously announced its support for Infantino during a meeting held on Thursday.
“We thank you for your continued commitment to the development of South American football and for the leadership you have shown globally,” said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez in a statement.
“We highly value the strong ties with our region and your vision to continue developing the sport worldwide,” Dominguez added.
Infantino has faced public criticism for various reasons, particularly for his closeness to Donald Trump. However, criticism within the football world has been limited, and no challenger has yet emerged for the upcoming election.
