Japanese football legend continues career at 58
Former Japanese international Kazuyoshi Miura announced that he is continuing his professional football career at the age of 58 with Fukushima United, a team in Japan’s third division, where he has been loaned from his current club, Yokohama FC, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
“My passion for football has not changed, regardless of my age,” said Miura, who will turn 59 in February.
In his 40th season as a professional, Miura played seven matches this year without scoring for Atletico Suzuka, a fourth-division Japanese team, where he was also on loan and which was eventually relegated to the regional league.
Nicknamed “King Kazu” in his home country, Miura made his professional debut in 1986 with Brazilian club Santos FC and has since played in Japan, Italy, Croatia, and Australia.
He returned to Japan in 2024 after a spell with Portuguese second-division club Oliveirense, where he was also on loan from Yokohama FC.
As reported by CE Report, one of Asia’s most famous footballers in the 1990s, Miura helped raise the profile of Japanese football with the launch of the J-League, Japan’s first professional league, in 1993.
Kazuyoshi Miura made his debut for the Japan national team in 1990 but was not selected for the squad at the team’s first World Cup appearance in 1998, despite scoring 55 goals in 89 international appearances.
