McLaren's Oscar Piastri refuses to help teammate in F1 title fight
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri refuses to help his teammate Lando Norris win the Formula 1 title, AP reports.
With two rounds remaining, Norris leads the drivers’ standings with 390 points, 24 ahead of Piastri and Max Verstappen, CE Report quotes BTA.
After his victory at last week’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver closed in on the championship leader and now seriously threatens Norris’s title ambitions.
Both McLaren drivers retired from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but they still hold an advantage over Verstappen in the championship battle.
Asked whether he would sacrifice himself for the team and help Norris win his first Formula 1 title, Piastri replied: “We had a brief conversation about this, and the answer is ‘no’. I’m still tied on points with Max and have a good chance to win if things go my way, so that’s how I’ll approach it.”
Lando Norris has a chance to secure the title this weekend in Qatar if he finishes at least two points ahead of Verstappen and Piastri in both the sprint and the race.
“The lead over Piastri before Las Vegas was 24 points and it’s still the same, so nothing needs to change. We’ve treated Max as a threat all year, even when he was behind in the championship. In every race preparation, we considered him a threat because we know what Max and Red Bull are capable of. We expect them to be fast here and next weekend as well. There’s no need for anything to change,” Norris told the media ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.
