"With immense sadness, we share that Luz Elena Sequeira, the 'Iron Nicaraguan' (her nickname), pioneer and ambassador of ultramarathons in Nicaragua, has come before our Lord," the Crazy Runners page posted.
Born in Costa Rica in 1987, she grew up and studied in Nicaragua.
She had recently earned a master’s degree and, in 2022, returned to her birth country, where she worked for a multinational company in Heredia. Her body was found without visible signs of violence, but police investigations are underway to determine the cause of her death.
In 2014, she became the first woman to complete ultramarathons in Nicaragua, specializing in 80-kilometer distances. She had covered 30,000 kilometers in national and international competitions, climbed ten volcanoes in 10 days, and ran for 24 consecutive hours.
