Zeynep Sonmez made history on Thursday by becoming the first Turkish tennis player to reach the third round at Wimbledon. She defeated China’s Xinyu Wang in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Sonmez is also the first Turk in 75 years to advance this far in a Grand Slam singles event, following Bahtiye Musluoğlu’s third-round appearance at the 1950 French Open.

The 23-year-old will next face either Suzan Lamens (Netherlands, world No. 69) or Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia, world No. 17).

Wimbledon runs from June 30 to July 13, with the women’s final set for July 12.
