Six Nordic federations lose confidence in Infantino

Six Nordic football federations have publicly declared that they have lost confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling for sweeping reforms in the governance of the world's largest football organization.

The football associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands met in Helsinki on Sunday, where they issued a joint statement supporting calls by UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF for Infantino to resign, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“The six Nordic federations have lost confidence in the FIFA president and are concerned about governance and decision-making at the highest levels of the organization,” the joint statement said.

The Nordic federations also called for an independent investigation into the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which involved the possibility of selling part of the rights to events such as the World Cup to private investors. The proposal was withdrawn following strong international criticism.

“We expect FIFA to provide binding guarantees that the governance or competitions of the organization will never again be subject to private ownership,” the statement added.

Pressure on Infantino has increased significantly, as UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF have also discussed the possibility of a vote of no confidence against him.

Meanwhile, the Danish Football Association has warned that it will seek a credible alternative for next year's FIFA presidential election.

Infantino, who is seeking a fourth term that would keep him in office until 2031, has responded to the criticism by emphasizing the importance of dialogue with the federations.

“It is important to engage, have dialogue and express views and opinions,” Infantino said during his visit to the Dominican Republic.

The move by the six Nordic federations represents another major blow to Infantino ahead of the upcoming FIFA presidential election.
