Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) bagged his first victory this season in stage 4 of the seven-stage Volta a Catalunya to claim the general classification lead.

The four-time Vuelta a Espana winner, who also won the Tour of Catalonia in 2023, beat Spanish rider Juan Ayuso of the UAE Emirates in the final sprint, which ended with a nine-kilometre climb to the Montserrat Monastery, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.

This was the second head-to-head for the two riders in two days after Ayuso edged Roglič in the sprint finish in stage 3 with Roglič now erasing Ayuso's six-second lead, having picked up some precious bonus seconds.

"Tough. It was annoying, a fast tempo from the start, the wind. UAE really pushed hard, but I had something left at the end, so luckily, I won," Roglič said after the race.

"Obviously for the moment, the differences are really small," he added.
