
Romania Joins Schengen at 40
Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu attended the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Area on Saturday in Schengen, Luxembourg. The event also celebrated the reopening of the renovated European Schengen Museum and the restored Princesse Marie-Astrid ship, where the original Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Invited by Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Hurezeanu highlighted Romania’s historic entry into the Schengen Zone on January 1, 2025, calling it a key step in strengthening European unity and security. He also noted Romania’s close ties with Luxembourg, where the country signed its EU accession treaty 20 years ago.
Hurezeanu emphasized the Schengen Area’s role in promoting freedom and prosperity across Europe and reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to protecting free movement and internal EU security.
The Schengen Area now includes 29 countries, making it the world’s largest zone of free movement.
