Mayor Dan Backs EU Path, Private Property

Romania

Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, an independent presidential candidate, affirmed his strong support for private property and Romania’s European and Atlantic orientation in response to concerns raised by Dan Șucu, president of the Concordia Employers' Confederation, CE Report quotes Agerpres

Dan emphasized that entrepreneurs and the business community must be active in the ongoing debate ahead of the presidential election’s second round. “Democracy and freedom are the foundation for building an Honest Romania,” he stated, adding that “private property is essential to encourage progress and prosperity.”

He criticized institutions in Romania as “dysfunctional” and “monopolized by interest groups,” arguing for more responsible public spending and a renewed focus on citizens and businesses.

Without naming him directly, Dan warned that his opponent, George Simion of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), and some of Simion’s suggested prime minister candidates have expressed support for nationalization and distancing from the EU and NATO.

In contrast, Simion issued a press release reaffirming his commitment to Romania’s EU and NATO ties, calling them “firm benchmarks of stability and security.”

The Concordia Employers' Confederation has asked both candidates to publicly commit to Romania’s Euro-Atlantic path, respect for the rule of law, and economic stability.
