Canada steps up sanctions on Russia
Canada is among the leaders in terms of both the quality and quantity of sanctions decisions it is working on.
Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy of Ukraine Vladyslav Vlasiuk said this during a television broadcast in response to a question about ongoing negotiations with Canada regarding sanctions, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
"Over the past year, the Canadians have really been outstanding when it comes to the sanctions decisions they have made. Along with the British, they have actually been leaders over the past year in terms of the number and, most importantly, the quality of the sanctions decisions they are working on. And believe me, these are far from the last sanctions decisions we will see from Canada. Of course, we have a good dialogue," he said.
Vlasiuk explained that many of the measures included in Canada's sanctions are the result of direct negotiations with the Ukrainian authorities, Ukraine identifying priorities, and providing the relevant evidence.
"We will continue. And believe me, it is only a matter of time before every significant and legitimate Russian defense-industrial enterprise is sanctioned in all major jurisdictions around the world," the commissioner said.
Asked about New Zealand's sanctions against Russia announced the previous day, he said that New Zealand, like Australia, has been an active member of the 40-country sanctions coalition from the very beginning.
"With New Zealand — and Australia as well — there is constant dialogue with the sanctions coordinators of these countries regarding further sanctions decisions. I understand that, for geographical reasons, Australia and New Zealand sometimes fall out of the focus of media attention, but in reality they are quite active in imposing sanctions on the Russian regime, including on issues that are particularly sensitive for Russia," Vlasiuk said.
As reported, Canada imposed sanctions on a UAE-based weapons manufacturer that supplied military equipment to Russia.
