Bosnia, Croatia sign agreement to upgrade border crossings

Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Borjana Krišto, signed in Sarajevo with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković the Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia on border crossings.

The Agreement will strengthen bilateral cooperation and ensure conditions for easier crossing of the common state border, as well as a more efficient system of border control, CE Report quotes FENA.

Krišto explained that under the previous agreement from 2013, only two crossings had the status of Border Inspection Posts (BIP), while under the new agreement five crossings now have that status – Svilaj, Izačić, Kamensko, Bijača, and Gradiška.

She added that crossings for international road and rail traffic have also been defined, as well as crossings intended only for residents of border areas.

“All border crossings under this agreement have been upgraded to a higher category,” Krišto stated, noting that further work remains on implementing the agreement, as both sides need to engage additional capacities.

Plenković said the agreement represents a significant step forward in facilitating the movement of people and goods between the two countries due to the reclassification of crossings.

He stressed that this is a comprehensive agreement aligned with Croatia’s recent adoption of the Foreigners Act, which has made it easier to issue long-term visas to Bosnian citizens.

Plenković expressed confidence that the new border crossing arrangement will enable further progress in economic exchange, which reached a record four billion euros in 2025.
