Türkiye's opposition reshaped as Ozel breaks away from CHP

Ozgur Ozel, the former leader of Türkiye's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), who was removed from office by a court ruling, has officially resigned and left the party along with 90 other MPs to form a new political party, Turkish state television TRT Haber reported om Friday.

Ozel also signed the documents making him a co-founder of a new political party, which will be called the New Party, CE Report quotes BTA.

Ozel's decision to establish a new party came, after on May 21, the Ankara Regional Court of Appeal annulled the party's 38th congress from 2023, removed leader Ozgur Ozel and reinstated former leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The ruling caused tension within the CHP and sparked protests, splitting the party into two camps – one supporting Ozel and the other supporting Kilicdaroglu.

Ozel expressed confidence that his new party will become the main opposition party in Türkiye's Parliament. After 91 MPs left the CHP, it will no longer be the second largest parliamentary party in the country. The question remains as to whether part of the CHP's party subsidy will be transferred to the New Party.
