Bulgaria must defend EU territorial integrity, opposition party says
The opposition Yes, Bulgaria party said that Bulgaria must take a clear position to guarantee the territorial integrity of every EU Member State in light of the upcoming meeting of European leaders over Greenland.
The Bulgarian government’s low-profile approach, in the hope that political figures will be removed from the US Magnitsky sanctions list for corruption, is "pathetic and undignified," added the party, which is part of the Democratic Bulgaria coalition, CE Report quotes BTA.
"We call on the government to adopt a responsible position at the January 22 meeting of the members of the European Council by expressing its solidarity with Denmark and Greenland and demonstrating that Bulgaria is capable of assuming responsibility for European security and unity. Only on this basis can we expect the same solidarity toward ourselves," the statement reads. According to Yes, Bulgaria, the Bulgarian government should take a position of solidarity with the European Union, including by supporting the undeniably necessary and serious strengthening of measures to guarantee security in the Arctic.
"Decisions about the future of any sovereign state must be made by its people, not imposed by an external power," the party added.
A united and strong European Union is the only long-term guarantee of security in Europe and of Bulgaria’s own security. Bulgaria must take part in serious efforts to achieve this, the position further reads.
"Our partnership with the United States has a deep value-based foundation and a long-term strategic vision. We will always work to develop the friendship between Bulgaria and America. And it is precisely in the name of preserving NATO as an alliance of free, civilized, and equal partners that we must now take a clear position - one that defines the boundaries of what is acceptable and unacceptable and defends the values of freedom and the rule of law," Yes, Bulgaria argued.
