Following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent visit to Türkiye and his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the German government has confirmed its intention to resume high-level diplomatic mechanisms aimed at strengthening bilateral and EU-Türkiye relations.

In an exclusive interview with CE Report, a German government spokesperson said that Türkiye is a key player in many foreign and security policy issues, including as a key ally in NATO.

"In order to deepen the strategic partnership, Foreign Ministers will resume the format of the ‘Strategic Dialogue’. In addition, the high-level economic forum will convene. The German government continues to work on progressing EU-Türkiye relations, for example, through high-level dialogues in the areas of migration and security,” the statement reads.

The statement highlights Berlin’s recognition of Türkiye’s growing importance in regional and global affairs, as well as its commitment to enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as defense, economy, and migration management.

Further details regarding the timing of the upcoming strategic dialogue or specific steps within the EU framework were not disclosed. However, the resumption of these high-level exchanges is seen as a sign of renewed momentum in Türkiye-Germany and Türkiye-EU relations.

On 30 October, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz paid his first visit to Ankara since taking office.
