Bulgaria Opposes EU Deal Changes

Politics

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has firmly opposed any revisions to the 2022 European compromise on North Macedonia's EU accession. In a letter sent Tuesday to EU leaders, Radev emphasized that the rights of Bulgarians in North Macedonia must not become a matter of political bargaining, CE Report quotes BTA

The statement follows a draft report on North Macedonia’s EU progress, adopted by the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. Radev criticized the report's preparation, calling out a lack of transparency and raising concerns over the conduct of some MEPs and officials.

He welcomed the European Parliament's rejection of claims about a "centuries-old Macedonian identity," saying it prevents further promotion of nationalist narratives from Skopje.

Radev reaffirmed Bulgaria's commitment to the 2022 consensus, brokered under the French EU Presidency, which lifted Sofia’s veto in exchange for Skopje's promises to uphold minority rights and combat hate speech. He warned that North Macedonia is showing growing unwillingness to fulfill these commitments, jeopardizing its EU path.
